Tree Surgery

As arborists (tree surgeons), we’re professional practitioners of arboriculture, meaning we have the skills, knowledge and experience to cultivate, manage, care for and rehabilitate trees and shrubs. With over 20 years experience, we can carry out remedial works to help improve the health of trees, reduce risks presented by trees or remove hazardous trees. We carry out this work for private domestic clients, local authorities and businesses.

Felling or Section Felling

The removal of an entire tree. When this cannot be done in one go (felling, we will avoid obstacles around the tree by removing the tree in sections. These will be dropped or lowered to the ground by our arborists using a system of ropes and pulleys. We prioritise safety of our staff, the client and surrounding environment throughout this process.

Crown Thinning

Crown thinning is the removal of a percentage of a tree’s branches, no more than 20-30% should be removed, depending on species. Our team will select dead, damaged and rubbing limbs then take an even number of branches from the crown to thin the branches. This reduces the shadow of the tree and lets light through to create a more even distribution.

Pollarding

Pollarding is a drastic method of pruning which should be avoided wherever possible. We may allow pollarding on street trees and trees that have been pollarded in the past (re-pollarding). Certain species should never be pollarded, however others cope much better. Regular re-pollarding will restrict the plant to that height.

Crown Reduction

Crown reduction is trimming a small percentage of a tree’s branches to reduce the size of its canopy. BS3998 recommends we remove up to 25% and no more. Some people believe that a tree can be made small but it can’t. It can be controlled by highly skilled arborists to keep it in the shape that the customer wants, and keep it structured, or within regulations.

Crown Raising

Some trees can let more light through when lower branches are removed. This is known as crown raising or crown lifting. Tristan and his trained arborists will remove less than 15% of the live height and leave the crown at least two thirds of the overall tree height to protect the tree. It will not be damaged if the branches that we remove are small. If this is done by someone without the experience needed, then the tree will end up with damage.

Ash Die-back (Chalara)

Chalara, also known as Ash dieback, is a fungal disease that affects all species of Fraxinus (Ash) tree. This disease is the most significant threat to trees in the UK since Dutch Elm disease. The first cases of the disease in Britain were officially recorded in the south-east of England in 2012 since then it has spread west across the UK. It is now affecting all parts of Wales. The fungus (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) attaches itself to the leaves of ash trees and spreads through the branches. It blocks the water transport systems in the leaves and branches which in turn causes leaf loss and lesions in the wood and on the bark.

As the disease progresses, it leads to the gradual dieback of the tree’s crown. The tree will become brittle and it’s branches will begin to snap and drop from the canopy. Without proper management the trees are at risk of collapsing entirely. Depending on the location of the tree, this can cause a significant risk. There is no known cure for the disease, and we cannot stop it from spreading. Chalara has the potential to kill over 90% of Ash trees in Ceredigion over the next 5 to 10 years.

How Arbcore Ltd deal with infected trees

Infected trees rapidly become unsafe to climb, we have our own modern, LOLER certified 25 meter MEWP (cherry picker/ access platform) which we use to access and safely dismantling the trees.
